Spatial Tax Data Portal for HSRC

Deep Current, along with technical partner Origen Software and key stakeholders SARS, Human Sciences Research Council, National Treasury and UFS, recently completed the build of the first Spatial Tax Data portal for South Africa in June 2023, www.spatialtaxdata.org.za.

This project initially needed a Map Explorer build from a large set of CSV aggregated data provided by HSRC. Through a configuration table approach we built a set APIs with Django and Python to align with the various Map explorer filter views which were built with Mapbox.gl, Deck.gl, D3.js, React.js and Uber’s H3 library. The finished product has both national views and local views for the top 8 metro municipalities. In a second phase of the project, we added Dashboard Visualisations which allows South African Municipalities the ability to make improved data-driven fiscal planning decisions. 

The new portal is described by many South African economists as a breakthrough in spatial statistics providing new insights into city and local economies.
